Between 1965/68 and the next landmark year of 1979, the year of the Iranian Revolution, the disastrous invasion of Afghanistan by the Red Army and the rise to power of Ronald Reagan, world politics took a dramatic turn and adopted a form which can be explained by the events of 1989 and 2001: the dramatic loss of the United States' hegemony was only postponed by the disintegration of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact, and in its place has emerged a multipolar global society which, under the influence of politicized religious movements and non-governmental organizations.
Rudolf the red-nosed reindeer Rudolf, the red-nosed reindeer, had a very shiny nose, and if you ever saw him you would even say it glows. All of the other reindeer used to laugh and call him names. They never let poor Rudolf join in any reindeer games. Then one foggy Christmas Eve Santa came to say: 'Rudolf, with your nose so bright won't you guide my sleigh tonight?'
Then how the reindeer loved him as they shouted out in glee: 'Rudolf, the red-nosed reindeer, you'll go down in history!' Snow fall over the trees.
One Christmas highlight is the carol singing with my Swiss partner's large extended family. Someone (not me) always proposes that we sing carols. This suggestion is readily taken up and almost everyone sings the first line enthusiastically. The problem is that almost nobody knows any more than this. By the second line, most people are just humming or la-la-ing along.
By the third line even this is too much and the majority are just silently opening and closing their mouths like goldfish. I find this so funny that I usually have to leave the room in fits of giggles. On a related topic: For most Swiss it is a badge of honour not to know the text of their own national anthem; anyone who does know it all is probably a naturalised foreigner. Away in a manger Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where He lay, The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay. The cattle are lowing, the Baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes; I love Thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky And stay by my side until morning is nigh. Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay Close by me forever, and love me, I pray; Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care, And fit us for Heaven to live with Thee there.

The First Nowell The first noel the Angel did say, was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; in fields where they lay keeping their sheep, on a cold winter's night, that was so deep REFRAIN: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Born is the King of Israel. They looked up and saw a star, shining in the east, beyond them far. And to the earth it gave great light, and so it continued both day and night REFRAIN And by the light of that same star, three wise men came from country far; to seek for a king was their intent, and to follow the star wherever it went. REFRAIN The star drew nigh to the north-west, o'er Bethlehem it took its rest, and there it did both stop and stay, right over the place where jesus lay.
REFRAIN Then entered in those wise men three, full reverently upon their knee, and offered there, in His presence, their gold, and myrrh, and frankincense. REFRAIN Then let us all with one accord, sing praises to our heavenly lord. That hath made heaven and earth of nought, and with his blood mankind hath bought. REFRAIN Autor: unbekannt. Kings of Orient We three kings of Orient are; Bearing gifts we traverse afar, Field and fountain, moor and mountain, Following yonder star. REFRAIN: O star of wonder, star of night, Star with royal beauty bright, Westward leading, still proceeding, Guide us to thy perfect light.
Born a King on Bethlehem’s plain Gold I bring to crown Him again, King forever, ceasing never, Over us all to reign. REFRAIN Frankincense to offer have I; Incense owns a Deity nigh; Prayer and praising, voices raising, Worshipping God on high. REFRAIN Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume Breathes a life of gathering gloom; Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, Sealed in the stone cold tomb. REFRAIN Glorious now behold Him arise; King and God and sacrifice; Alleluia, Alleluia, Sounds through the earth and skies.
REFRAIN Autor: John Henry Hopkins. Joy to the World Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare Him room, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven, and heaven, and nature sing. Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns! Let men their songs employ; While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy. No more let sins and sorrows grow, Nor thorns infest the ground; He comes to make His blessings flow Far as the curse is found, Far as the curse is found, Far as, far as, the curse is found.
He rules the world with truth and grace, And makes the nations prove The glories of His righteousness, And wonders of His love, And wonders of His love, And wonders, wonders, of His love. Autor: Isaac Watts.
German Christmas carols A brief history of German Christmas carols Dating back to medieval times, German Christmas carols have a long tradition. These early tunes normally integrated well-known folk melodies with lyrics written by local clergymen and they were sung in churches, often as choral dialogues, or performed in religious Christmas plays. The oldest known song is ' from the 11th century. Some of the oldest German carols, such as ', and ' are translations of Latin Christmas hymns. These songs became part of Church rituals surrounding the observance of Christmas. As such, they were solemn and humble tributes of reverence to an almighty, powerful God. Under the influence of the Reformation, the celebration of Christmas extended outside of the Church into the family domain.

It was in the 19th century that many of the festive German carols known today arose. Older carols were adapted and modernized; new lyrics were supplied for familiar folk tunes. While the religious impulse behind the spirit of the celebration was not wholly abandoned, the tone of the new German Christmas carols was lighter and less ritualistic than the Church songs. With the secularization of the Christmas holiday in the 20th century, German Christmas carols arose that had no connection with their religious origins. ' is one such example.
